December 4, 2010 was a date remembered in history for the launch of the very first Philippine Geography Olympiad (PGO), an inter-high school geography quiz bee that brought together geography enthusiasts from different high schools in the country.
The event has been an excellent venue ever since for students to showcase their skills and understanding in the field of geography through a series of friendly scholastic competition. The winner of the competition shall have the opportunity to represent the country in the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo). For next year’s iGeo, it is going to be held in Tver Region, Russia.
The successful launch of PGO paved the way for a grander competition. More than 30 participating schools not only from Metro Manila but also from Visayas and Mindanao gathered together in the second and third year of the competition, held on December 3, 2011 and December 1, 2012 respectively. On its fourth year, PGO brought together over 80 teams from all over the country last November 30, 2013.
Now on its tenth year, PGO continues to promote the active interest in the science of Geography, enhance camaraderie, develop scholastic excellence among students, and bring out the geographer in every participant.
